Hidden Gem Co-Op Games on Steam Your Squad Will Love

Everyone knows Deep Rock Galactic and Left 4 Dead 2. But what about the co-op games that fly under the radar? The ones your group has never heard of, that do not show up on every "best co-op" list, but absolutely deliver when you give them a shot.

This list is for squads who have already burned through the obvious picks and want something fresh. These are games that either never got the hype they deserved, launched quietly and built a cult following, or sit in a niche that does not get enough love. All of them are worth the install.

What Makes a Game a Hidden Gem?

For this list, I am looking for co-op games that:

  • Support 2-4 players (or more) in meaningful co-op.
  • Do not dominate every Steam recommendation list.
  • Have strong reviews from people who actually played with friends.
  • Offer something distinct instead of being a clone of a bigger title.

Some of these have grown in popularity over time, but they still feel like discoveries compared to the usual suspects. If your group is tired of scrolling past the same 20 games, start here.

Hidden Gem Co-Op Games on Steam

Grounded

1-4 players

Honey I Shrunk the Kids meets survival co-op. Build bases, fight giant spiders, and explore a backyard that feels massive when you are ant-sized.

Valheim

1-10 players

Viking survival with sailing, building, and boss fights that feel earned. Less polished than AAA titles but has soul and runs great on modest hardware.

PlateUp!

1-4 players

Roguelite restaurant management with local and online co-op. Deeper than Overcooked with automation, upgrades, and runs that spiral into chaos.

Gunfire Reborn

1-4 players

Roguelite FPS with animal heroes and buildcraft. Runs are 30-45 minutes, and the gunplay stays satisfying even when RNG is not on your side.

Remnant II

1-3 players

Souls-like shooter with procedural worlds and build variety. Great for squads who want challenge without the full FromSoftware commitment.

Barotrauma

2-16 players

Submarine simulator meets survival horror. Everyone has a role, and things go wrong in wonderfully chaotic ways. Best with 4-6 friends.

Risk of Rain 2

1-4 players

Third-person roguelite with scaling chaos. Runs start tame and end in screen-filling mayhem. Quick to pick up, hard to put down.

Ship of Fools

1-2 players

Roguelite co-op where you defend a ship from sea monsters. Simple controls, satisfying combat, and runs that fit a weeknight.

Grounded: Shrunk Down Survival

Grounded is one of those games that sounds silly until you play it. You are shrunk to ant size in a backyard, building bases, fighting spiders, and exploring a world that feels huge when a blade of grass is taller than you.

It supports up to four players and has a great mix of survival, building, and combat. The backyard setting is surprisingly atmospheric, and the progression from "run from everything" to "we are the apex predators" is satisfying. If your group likes survival games but wants something different from the usual forest or island, Grounded is a strong pick.

Valheim: Viking Vibes and Sailing

Valheim blew up when it launched, but it has settled into a quieter spot. For co-op squads who like building, sailing, and boss fights that require actual preparation, it is still one of the best experiences on Steam.

The game runs well on modest hardware, supports up to 10 players on a server, and has a progression loop that feels earned. You will chop trees, build longships, and sail to new biomes. The bosses are tough but fair, and the world has a mood that is hard to replicate. If your group has not tried it yet, it is worth a weekend.

PlateUp!: Overcooked But Deeper

If you have played Overcooked, PlateUp! will feel familiar at first. You run a restaurant, cook food, and serve customers. But PlateUp! adds roguelite progression, automation, and upgrades that turn each run into something different.

You can automate dishwashing, set up conveyor belts, and slowly turn your kitchen into a well-oiled machine until it all falls apart. It supports local and online co-op, and runs are short enough for weeknights. Great for groups who want more strategy than Overcooked offers.

Barotrauma: Chaos in a Tin Can

Barotrauma is not for everyone, but for the right group it is unforgettable. You crew a submarine on an alien ocean moon. Everyone has a role: captain, engineer, medic, security. Things break, creatures attack, and the submarine fills with water while someone frantically tries to fix the reactor.

It is part simulator, part survival horror, and part comedy of errors. Best with 4-6 friends who do not mind things going wrong. If your group likes emergent chaos and role-based co-op, Barotrauma is a hidden gem worth discovering.

How to Find More Hidden Gems

Steam's algorithm tends to surface the same games. To find more underrated co-op picks, try filtering by "co-op" and "positive reviews" while sorting by "release date" or "user reviews." Indie games often fly under the radar until word of mouth builds.

You can also use SquadRoll to surface games your whole group already owns. Sometimes the hidden gem is sitting in your library, forgotten after a sale. Add your Steam accounts, filter by co-op, and let the app pick something you might have overlooked.
