Best Steam co-op games with full controller support

If your ideal game night involves a couch, snacks, and a ridiculous number of USB cables, controller support matters. I've had nights where we spent more time arguing with Steam Input than shooting aliens. The good news is there are plenty of co-op games on Steam that "just work" with controllers.

The best Steam co-op games with full controller support include Deep Rock Galactic, Left 4 Dead 2, PlateUp!, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Risk of Rain 2, and Castle Crashers. All of these support multiple controllers cleanly and are proven couch co-op staples.

In this post I'll walk through my favorite controller-friendly co-op games, what works well on the couch, and what to watch out for. I'll also call out games that look great on paper but fall apart when you plug in a fourth controller.

What makes a great controller co-op game

Before we get into specific titles, let's define the bar. For this list, I only picked games we've actually played from the couch with at least three people using controllers. Keyboard and mouse are fine, but they can't be required. The game needs native controller support in menus, lobbies, and gameplay, not just a basic layout that mostly works.

I also care a lot about setup friction. If I have to explain to my brother-in-law how to switch controller profiles in some hidden Steam overlay, that game is not going on this list. The ideal flow is: plug in controllers, hit A, join lobby, start mission. Bonus points if the game lets you mix couch players and online friends in the same squad.

Deep Rock Galactic: Gold standard for couch co-op

Deep Rock Galactic is my go to example of how to do controller co-op right. It supports four players, the controller layout is clean, and you can run full missions from the couch without needing a mouse. Even the mission terminal and upgrade menus work well with a controller.

On my setup, we run two controllers on the couch and a third player on a nearby desk with keyboard and mouse. The game doesn't care. Everyone can drop in and out between missions, and the UI keeps up. If you want a "beer and bugs" game night with minimal tech headaches, start here.

Left 4 Dead 2: Old but still fantastic with controllers

Left 4 Dead 2 is older, but it is still one of the best four player co-op shooters on PC. Controller support works well both in menus and in game. It is not quite as smooth to navigate as newer titles, but it is close enough that my non gamer friends never complain.

The big win with L4D2 is how forgiving the enemy design is. If someone is a little slower on a controller, the game gives them room to catch up as long as the team sticks together. On higher difficulties you might want keyboard and mouse, but for Normal or Advanced, controllers are absolutely fine.

PlateUp!: Chaotic kitchen that plays great on a couch

PlateUp! looks simple, but the controller support is surprisingly solid. It supports up to four players locally, and the single stick movement plus action buttons feel natural even for people who rarely game. My kids picked up the controls faster than I did.

The big advantage for PlateUp! is how quick each run is. You can fail a restaurant in ten minutes and restart without anyone feeling bad. That makes it perfect for a mixed skill group where you have one serious min-maxer and three chaos goblins who just want to serve pies.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: Borderlands style with couch comfort

If your crew likes looter shooters, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a strong pick. It supports full controller play, including split screen on consoles and solid controller support on PC over Steam. On PC I still recommend turning off some of the aim assist, but the core experience works well for couch co-op.

The story is very over the top, which can be a plus or minus depending on your group. For us it works best as a "once a week" campaign. Fire it up, run a few quests, laugh at the chaos, then go back to other games until next week.

Risk of Rain 2 and other great controller friendly options

Risk of Rain 2 is another strong controller game, especially once everyone understands the item system. The single stick movement and ability cooldowns map nicely to controller buttons, and the camera stays manageable even when the screen fills with enemies.

Other honorable mentions include Castle Crashers, Overcooked! 2, and Children of Morta. All of them work well with controllers and scale from two to four players without a lot of extra setup.

Controller setup tips for smoother game nights

Even with good controller support, there are a few tricks that make PC couch co-op easier. First, label your controllers or at least keep them in consistent spots. The "Player 2 grabbed Player 3's controller" dance gets old fast.

TIP: Build a test playlist of two or three known good games like Deep Rock Galactic and PlateUp! If a new game fights you on controller support, bail out and swap to a reliable one rather than burning half the night troubleshooting. Your future self will thank you.

If you want help finding controller friendly co-op games everyone owns already, that's exactly what I built SquadRoll for. It digs through your group's Steam libraries and surfaces games that match your player count and play style, so you can spend more time playing and less time fiddling with settings.
